The Serenity movie was released in the US nationwide on September 30, 2005.
First there were the pre-screenings*. Then a few fortunate cities got screenings of the real thing. And now the world has to see what happens to our beloved crew and boat, 6 months after the end of the FIREFLY TV series.
You don't have to have seen the FIREFLY TV series to appreciate the SERENITY movie. But if you take the time to get to know our BDH (Big Damn Heros), the thrills and spills are that much more exciting. And if you don't want to watch all 14 episodes, Fangirl recommends seeing "Bushwacked" and/or "War Stories". Those will give you a good intro to the characters and a let you know a bit about the 'verse they live in.
And in 2006 and 2007, the Can't Stop the Serenity screenings brought this should-not-have-been-made movie to the big screen in select cities around the world as a fund raiser for Equality Now, Joss Whedon's charity of choice. Be sure to check it out in 2008!

Better Days - Issue #2 - Easy money isn't always easy. #2 of 3 in the 2008 comic from Joss which tells a story in the Firefly years when the crew of the Serenity actually pulled off a job that paid.
See if you can find the initials of the cover artist, Adam Hughes, somewhere, hidden, in plain sight.

Better Days - Issue #3 - Last issue where we find out what's really going on in the 2008 comic from Joss which tells a story in the Firefly years when the crew of the Serenity actually pulled off a job that paid.
This series had a great set of covers that form a panorama of all crew members when you line them up, side by side, in order.
Rumors of a new comic series before the end of the year ... entitled the Shepherd's Tale ...

Joss wrote a 3 issue comic story that takes place after the end of the Firefly TV show and before events in the Serenity movie. They were released by Dark Horse Comics with 3 different covers for each issue. So if you collected all the covers, you'd have 1 cover representing each of the 9 characters, and you'd have 3 copies of the same story.
That same story is now available as the Serenity Trade Paper Back called "Those Left Behind", so if you just want to know what happened, this is the one to get.
If you are interested in collecting all the covers, you can use this Serenity Comic Covers Guide to help you out. Right click to save the image to your desktop, or click and it will open in a new browser window.
The Serenity Comic Covers Guide shows an image of each cover, what issue number (1, 2 or 3) it is, and who the comic artist is; prints on a 8.5" x 11" paper. The comic artist is important if you are ordering an issue since most comic stores will have it listed by the comic artist, not the character. And if you go in and ask for the Kaylee cover, they might not know what you are talking about, in which case you can educate them, and then ask for the Chen cover. ^_-

Individual comic issues are harder to find, now that the TPB (trade paper back) is out. They should be around $3-5 dollars for the reprints/non-first printings/what you're finding in the stores these days. If you care about first editions, the only difference (so I've been told) in the #1 issues is how close to the top/bottom of the comic the staples are. A more noticable difference is in the re-print (so I've been told) of issue #2, the opening page says "Part #3 of 3", even though you're holding #2. If you know more details about how to tell a first edition printing from the subsequent printings, please use the contact form and I'll update this listing.

And once you've seen the movie, check out
Serenity: The Official Visual Companion - while only a book, it's full of wonderful photographs, Joss Whedon and cast interviews, and the original shooting script ... not all of which made it into the final movie. |

There is also the Serenity paperback book, written by Keith R.A. DeCandido ... and if you come across a link for "Mirror Image (Serenity)", don't pre-order it. Here's the official word from Keith (krad entry - Aug 31 2005, 02:38 AM) that it's not a real entry:
"Amazon.com made that entry up.
There will be two more Serenity novels, but it is a totally open question as to who will be writing them and when they'll be published.
I hope I'm writing one of them -- I sent in a proposal, but so did lots of other people. We shall see....." |

While it's got Serenity in the title, Finding Serenity is a collection of essays about the show FIREFLY - the characters, the eps, and the unique vision of the future that they live in. Edited by Glenn Yeffeth and Jane Espenson, who also wrote the Firefly ep "Shindig", this book also contains a piece by Kaylee herself, Jewel Staite about her favorite moments on and off the set. |

Serenity Found is another collection of essays about the 'verse, including a piece from our beloved Capt'n. Here's what Amazon has to say about it:
"This follow-up to Finding Serenity takes the examination of Joss Whedon's canceled cult favorite even further, addressing the events of the film Serenity as well as offering even more thought-provoking, fascinating, and far-thinking essays on the Firefly universe. Contributors include actor Nathan Fillion, who played Captain Mal Reynolds, as well as noted science fiction writer Orson Scott Card. Behind-the-scenes details are explored, including why Firefly makes such a good platform for the upcoming Multiverse online game (with an essay written by Multiverse executive producer Corey Bridges), while other essays examine recurring issues from both the series and the movie, such as the Alliance's hatred of science, the role of smart-mouthed women, and the real reason the Firefly universe has no aliens."
